PAGDAND

As more and more land is engulfed by buildings and roads to satiate the population’s growing needs, cityscapes are slowly turning into what are popularly known as concrete jungles. Smoke , dust and fumes have engulfed our streets. Air quality is at an all time low. Though not as bad at metropolitan cities, the pollution index of Vadodara is 67.46, which is considered High. Air pollutants not only damage the ecosystem but also cause a wide range of diseases like asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer and heart attack. A study found that outdoor air pollution is the sixth largest killer in India. There are 4 Indian cities in the top 10 of the most polluted cities in the world.

Green areas in urban landscapes are a great benefit for both us and the environment. They filter dust and pollutants from the air as well as contribute to the health of soil and water. Urban green cover not only beautify cities but help bring down temperatures. They provide recreational space, a breath of fresh air in busy concrete landscapes, as well as shelter to urban fauna.

Vruksh Utsav is a plantation drive initiated by Pagdand in association with the Forest Department of the Government of Gujarat, with the aim to increase the green cover in the city of Vadodara. Various areas in Vadodara have been greened under this program: Waghodia, Makarpura, Ram Krishna Paramhans Hospital, Maneja, Swati Society(Sama), Manjalpur Complex, Fatehgunj, Chhani & Mukteshwar Mahadev Mandir.

A unique initiative to increase green cover in the city, the green ambulance project consists of two electric vehicles equipped with gardening tools, fertilisers, pesticides etc, which are at the beck and call of every citizen in Vadodara who require help in plantation and maintenance of trees. 1300 saplings have been planted under this project till date.

Pagdand worked with VMC to translocate several large trees on Jail Road, Vadodara. These trees would otherwise have been cut down to make space for widening the road.
